Information from the General Meeting on 3/28
Our general meeting on Tuesday 3/28 we heard from Janis White, Immediate Past President and Family and Community Engagement Chair, Seattle Special Education PTSA (and IHS Parent). The Seattle Special Education PTSA has a new guide to navigating Special Education services in Seattle Public Schools. The guide can be found here: Special Education Guide it is available in 10 languages. A lot of time, effort and money went into creating this guide. Like every PTSA out there, the Seattle Special Education PTSA needs support. If you would like to make a donation every single dollar helps offset the cost of making this guide. Donate here.
We also heard from Amber Donaldson (aka Ms. A) about Restorative Practices at Ingraham High School. Last year Ms. A trained students on microaggressions and the students developed a microaggressions training for IHS staff and presented their training at a staff meeting. This year the students are working on microaggressions 2.0 to share with staff in April. Ms. A has also held 2 restorative retreats one over summer break last summer and the other over mid-winter break this year. Ms. A spoke about restorative circles which you can read more about here:
She also read a passage from the book, Circle in the Square, Building Community and Repairing Harm in School by Nancy Riestenberg that she had shared with staff at the last staff meeting. You can purchase a copy of the book here. Ms. A is in Room 115B and welcomes all students. FOI believes in the work that Ms. A is doing. Thanks to the generous donations from the FOI Community, we are able to help fund (through the grants process) Ms. A and the students she serves.
